“I’ve got to go.” Ruby glanced up at her entourage. “No offense, but it might be hard to explain your presence to the Medical Examiner—except for you, Detective Farrow.”

“Division of labor,” Blair said, “Maeve, Felix, Christopher, and I will continue to look for Jim Delphentine. You can go see the Medical Examiner in the interim.”

Ruby deflated with relief. She hadn’t realized just how much she’d come to rely on having Jon by her side while working a case. She missed him terribly, longed to feel his caress on her skin.

Having Blair and her crew helping to look for Jon made her feel like the weight of the world did not rest solely upon her own shoulders.

“Hey, what about me?” Allegra asked. “You’re not going to dump me off with a bunch of strangers, are you?”

“Ah,” Ruby pursed her lips. “I’m not sure I can sneak you into the M.E.’s chambers either, Allie.”

“Oh come on, I can be your like, I don’t know, assistant or something. Like take your apprentice to work day.”

Ruby’s mouth grew tight. She didn’t want to disappoint Allegra. On the other hand, Medical Examiner Moira McGuire was a Selkie, a shapeshifter similar to Christopher Farrow. McGuire would probably understand the witch/apprentice relationship, or at least tolerate it.

“alright,” Ruby said, delighting in the excitement lighting up Allegra’s brown-eyed gaze. “BUT…you are to be on your best behavior. Stow your sullen teenaged tendencies for the time being. Moira is an…old friend of Jon’s, and she’s to be considered our trusted ally.”

“Old ‘friend,’, huh?” Allie chuckled. “That’s another way of saying they used to boink.”

Maeve’s hand flew in front of her mouth, her eyes aghast. Blair looked away awkwardly. Christopher’s hand slapped over his mouth to stifle a laugh, while Felix gave in to his mirth.

“She said boink,” Felix quipped.

“Yeah, she did,” Rumpus added.

“Believe me, guys,” Rufus said, tail twitching. “You’re lucky she said boink.”

Ruby ran a hand down her face. “Now you see, Allie, that would be the type of comment we would want to avoid making around Ms. McGuire. Just…just don’t say anything.”

“My lips are sealed.” Allegra made a motion over her mouth like closing a zipper.

“I’m not sure I feel the least bit relieved.” Ruby turned to Blair. “Keep me posted on any progress you make.”

“Ditto,” Blair said. “We already decided. We’re not going back to New York until we find out what happened to Jon.”

“I appreciate that,” Ruby said, a smile stretching her lips. “I really do, and I know Jon will, too.”

Blair nodded, and the two parties went their separate ways. Ruby drove herself and Allegra to the mortuary. Allie paused at the entrance, shivering slightly.

“Why do I feel cold?”

“A lot of recently departed people have been through this building, Allie. That leaves a sort of psychic fingerprint behind. As a witch, you’re especially sensitive to psychic phenomena like that.”

“I don’t like it,” Allie shivered.

“It takes some getting used to, but it can’t hurt you.” Ruby arrested a hand on her shoulder. “Would you like to wait outside?”

“No,” Allegra said stubbornly.
